Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Laboratories must provide protective clothing, face and eye protection and respirators for staff, equipping them with protective items appropriate for the risks inherent in all tasks they perform.   This program is designed to inform laboratory employees about the personal protective equipment (PPE) they will need to protect themselves from exposures to chemicals, blood and body fluids.

During site inspections, OSHA and other regulatory agencies will assess your facility to ensure you have adequate supplies of all PPE.   In addition, the inspector will ask employees to demonstrate the proper procedure for putting on (donning) and removal (doffing) of lab coats and how to aseptically remove gloves.   OSHA will check to make sure you have lab coats made of fabric that meets the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) specifications for PPE.

OSHA will also ask to see documentation of employee training on proper selection and use of PPE. This includes coats or gowns, gloves, face and eye protection and face fit tests for respirators.

Disc #1 is a CD that includes a leader’s guide that will assist you with the training and examples of the attendance sheet, quiz and evaluation form that you can print out.

Disc #2 is a 25 minute DVD that addresses the proper way to select and wear laboratory personal protective equipment.

Successful completion of this program will grant 0.1 CEU from the ASCLS PACE Program.   This program is also approved for 0.1 CEU for California and Florida license renewal.
